Shem Olam / Part 2, Ch. 5 – 63

Hashem wanted to increase our nation’s merits in order to enhance our eternal existence, so he gave us the Torah, the source of life, for only through it can we achieve eternity. By connecting to ourselves to Torah, its light shines through our spirit, and that light gives us life in the eternal world. If, G-d forbid, a person removes himself from the Torah he removes himself from that source of existence. This is the reason that Hashem stresses the importance of our learning, as our Sages said, ‘Hashem overlooked the sins of idolatry, forbidden relations, and murder, but did not forgive the forsaking of Torah learning’. Like a loving father who cannot stand by and watch his child’s life blood ebb away without taking action, so Hashem does not let us forsake Torah learning, for that is our eternal life blood, and only through its light will we exist in the world to come.

“And the utterly undoubtable truth is that if the entire world, from one end to the other, would be absent of our engagement and delving into the Torah, even for one moment, literally, then all the worlds - both upper and lower - would be destroyed instantly, and would turn into utter chaos, chas v’shalom…” (Nefesh Hachaim)
