The Laws of Charity – 1

1) One should not give charity in order to get a name for oneself and to become famous, for this is a disgusting trait, and not only is it not considered charity, but he is called a sinner. However, one who gives charity in order to gain, for example if he says “I am giving charity so that my son will live”, or “so that I will merit the world to come” or “so I will continue my success”, or any other similar things, it is considered pure charity. All this is only on condition that if his intention is not realized, he does not regret having given the charity unsuccessfully, and he does not have any complaints about Hashem, but admits that what Hashem did was the right thing. (Meiri Bava Basra 9a)

2) Even though a person should not give charity in order to glorify himself, if, however, he donates something for charitable purposes, he may write his name on it, that it should be a memory for him, and it is even correct to do so. (Kitzur Shulchan Aruch 34)

The wise man says: I shall learn two halachot today, and two tomorrow, until I learn the entire Torah entirely… (Vayikra Rabba)
