The Laws of Charity – 3

1) A person should always distance himself from accepting charity, and even let himself be put in pain so that he will not need to accept help from others. Our sages said that one should treat Shabbos like a weekday (meaning that one should eat weekday food etc.) rather than taking from others. Even if he was an honoured learned man, who became poor, he should involve himself in earning a living, and even if it a profession which is looked down on, rather than relying on others. (Kitzur Shulchan Aruch 34)

2) Any person who does not need charity and tricks others into giving him, will not die before he himself ends up needing others. (ibid)

The wise man says: I shall learn two halachot today, and two tomorrow, until I learn the entire Torah entirely… (Vayikra Rabba)
