The Laws of Prayer/The Amidah (84)

1) Concerning one who eats or drinks before praying in the morning, the verse says “And Me, you have thrown after your body!”, as Hashem says that after this man has eaten and drunk and become haughty, he then accepts the yoke of the kingdom of heaven upon himself. Chazal also said that there is an allusion to this prohibition in the verse “You may not eat on the blood!” in that it means that you shall not eat before you have prayed about your blood. (Mishne Berurah 65)

2) One may drink water before praying. Coffee and tea are also permitted if drunk without sugar or milk. Some permit with sugar and others even allow a little milk. (ibid)

The wise man says: I shall learn two halachot today, and two tomorrow, until I learn the entire Torah entirely… (Vayikra Rabba)
