The Laws of Prayer (The morning services) (25)

1)    1) While praying the Amidah, one may not hold Tefillin, holy books, knives, money or other such articles in one’s hand, as he will be concentrating on them to ensure that they do not fall, and he will therefore be unable to concentrate properly on his prayers. Some halachic authorities maintain that it is forbidden to hold anything at all while praying. It is also forbidden to put a child in front of him while praying, as one concentrates on supervising the child and not on praying. (Shulchan Aruch and Mishne Berurah 96)

2)    2) Some say that the above rule applies not only to the Amidah but also to the Shema and the verses of praise, in that one must not hold anything for fear of interrupting his concentration. (ibid)

The wise man says: I shall learn two halachot today, and two tomorrow, until I learn the entire Torah entirely… (Vayikra Rabba)
