The Laws of The Beginning of the Month (5) (Ya’aleh Veyavo)

1)    One who forgot to say Ya’aleh Veyavo in the evening services does not go back to repeat anything, whether it is the first or second night of Rosh Chodesh. The reason for this is that since in the days that we used to sanctify the new month according to the testimony of witnesses who saw the “birth” of the new moon, the sanctification took place during the day and not the night, it follows that the day of Rosh Chodesh was not then known during the night and therefore even nowadays when we know when Rosh Chodesh will be, we do not repeat for Ya’aleh Veyavo.

2)    One who forgot to say Ya’aleh Veyavo in the morning or afternoon services does go back according to the following rules: 1) If he remembered that he had erred after saying the words “Baruch Attah Hashem” in the blessing of “Retzeih”, he should finish off “Lamdeini Chukecha” and return to Ya’aleh Veyavo. 2) If he remembers after having said “Hamachazir Shechinaso Letzion” but before he had commenced “Modim”, he should say Ya’aleh Veyavo at this stage and continue with “Modim”. 3) If he remembered after having commenced “Modim” but before he had finished the entire Amidah, he should return to the blessing of “Retzeih” [if he is always accustomed to adding supplications at the end of his Amidah and he has not yet finished them, it is as if he remembered before the end of the Amidah]. 4. If he had finished his entire Amidah even if he had not yet taken the three steps back, he returns to the beginning of the Amidah.

The wise man says: I shall learn two halachot today, and two tomorrow, until I learn the entire Torah entirely… (Vayikra Rabba)
