The Laws of the New Year (1)

1)    One may not recite Halel on Rosh Hashanah, as the books of life and death are opened before Hashem, and how can we say songs? Even though we are assured that we will be found innocent, we must nevertheless be fearful and scared of the awe of judgment and through this we will merit that Hashem will remember us for merit. (Shulchan Aruch and Mishne Berurah 584)

2)    The custom is to eat specific foods on the night of Rosh Hashanah as a good sign. It follows that one should be very careful not to become angry during these days, as besides for the magnitude of the sin, it also achieves that the holding back from anger will be a good sign for the entire year. Instead, he should be happy in his heart and trust in Hashem with repentance and good deeds. (ibid)

“Moshe established for Yisrael, that they should inquire and teach the issue of the day, the halachos of Pesach on Pesach, the halachos of Atzeres on Atzeres, the halachos of chag on the chag” (Megilla 32)
