The Laws of the Three Weeks/The nine days (15)

1)    According to the opinion of the Shulchan Aruch (this is the custom of most Sephardic Jews) the laws of mourning are only applied to the week in which the ninth of Av falls. According to the opinion of the Rem”a, however, (and this is the custom of the Ashkenazy Jews) the custom is to keep the laws of mourning from the first of Av. In a year when the ninth falls on Shabbos and is postponed until the Sunday, according to the custom of the Sephardic Jews there is no week in which it falls that year. Regarding haircuts, however, some are stringent and do not cut their hair on the day before Shabbos Chazon even in this year. (Shulchan Aruch 551, Ben Ish Chai Devarim 12, Kaf Hachaim 551,78)

2)    During these days one may not wash clothes, even for wearing after the ninth of Av, (as by doing this one forgets the mourning). It is also forbidden to wear laundered clothes, even if they were washed before these days. (Shulchan Aruch and Mishne Berurah 426,2)

“Moshe established for Yisrael, that they should inquire and teach the issue of the day, the halachos of Pesach on Pesach, the halachos of Atzeres on Atzeres, the halachos of chag on the chag” (Megilla 32)
