Toras Habayis / Ch. 1 – 4

Like the parable of the prince described above, sent to a foreign land to collect treasures, so we were sent to this world to collect mitzvas, and the organ with which we can collect most mitzvas is our mouth. Every time we pronounce one of the holy words of Torah, we earn another Torah commandment. For this reason Hashem instructed us to reap the maximum benefit we can from our short term on earth, and commanded us to utilize every moment we can, not allowing any slack in our pursuit of this tremendous wealth, both in the comfort of our home and on the move.

However, if a person does not remind himself of this constantly, he will lose sight of this truth. Like the prince sent to a land where precious jewels are so plentiful that no one appreciates them, so when a person sees that the holy Torah is freely available to all yet rarely pursued, his awareness slowly diminishes. However, a person who is not small-minded, who has a sensitive heart and a clean spirit, does not fall into slumber. He reminds himself constantly that life is short, and only in this world is Torah considered a cheap commodity. He wastes no time collecting Torah-jewels, taking no heed of his boorish compatriots who consider diamonds as glass shards.

“And the utterly undoubtable truth is that if the entire world, from one end to the other, would be absent of our engagement and delving into the Torah, even for one moment, literally, then all the worlds - both upper and lower - would be destroyed instantly, and would turn into utter chaos, chas v’shalom…” (Nefesh Hachaim)
