Toras Habayis / Ch. 2 – 8

[Continuation of the reasons a person was created to learn Torah]

3.     Because a person can perform many more mitzvas with his mouth than with any other organ, every word being another mitzva in its own right. Thus, if a person is presented with a mitzva that others can perform instead of him, he may not stop his Torah learning to perform that mitzva. If a person is delegated a specific number of days and years to complete his task here and he sits back and wastes hours at a time, he creates a void in his soul of thousands of mitzvas he was supposed to attain and didn’t (since every minute he can speak two hundred words of Torah). He thus lost thousands of positive angels left uncreated through his slack, and if he continues so for months and years, surely his loss is endless.

“And the utterly undoubtable truth is that if the entire world, from one end to the other, would be absent of our engagement and delving into the Torah, even for one moment, literally, then all the worlds - both upper and lower - would be destroyed instantly, and would turn into utter chaos, chas v’shalom…” (Nefesh Hachaim)
