Toras Habayis / Ch. 2 – 9

The terrible loss described above caused by wasting learning time is just if he just sat idle and did nothing. However, humans are not naturally silent, they tend to speak idle talk, and with it invariably forbidden speech, as it states, ‘with many words iniquity is inevitable’. This chatter inevitably includes slighting others, gossip, lies, quarrelling, mocking others and other Torah prohibitions. Thus, instead of adding holiness to himself, he added piles of forbidden speech for which he will be accountable, as every word is carefully stored away to punish him in the next world. This is another reason that Hashem commanded us to study Torah constantly, for by studying Torah a person is spared many verbal iniquities.

“And the utterly undoubtable truth is that if the entire world, from one end to the other, would be absent of our engagement and delving into the Torah, even for one moment, literally, then all the worlds - both upper and lower - would be destroyed instantly, and would turn into utter chaos, chas v’shalom…” (Nefesh Hachaim)
