Toras Habayis / Ch. 4 – 19

A person should regularly contemplate how the source of his soul is truly in the upper worlds, as a Jews’ spirit is from the Divine Throne and only came down to this world temporarily to amass Torah and mitzvas for his eternal reward. This is like a person who travelled to a far-off land for a rare market day where he can earn in one day what a person earns in many years. If on that special day someone would offer him a free newspaper, he would not even look at it, for every minute there he could be amassing tremendous wealth. So too, one should scorn someone who offers him a newspaper to read, for why would he spend his time on vanities and lose the unique opportunity for which he was sent all the way down from the Divine Throne.

“And the utterly undoubtable truth is that if the entire world, from one end to the other, would be absent of our engagement and delving into the Torah, even for one moment, literally, then all the worlds - both upper and lower - would be destroyed instantly, and would turn into utter chaos, chas v’shalom…” (Nefesh Hachaim)
