Toras Habayis / Ch. 6 – 24

[Continuation of why a person should learn some Torah by heart]

  1. The holy Zohar refers to someone who ‘inherits’ a maseches as someone who inherited a whole world, and it surely does not refer to someone who learned the maseches once, but rather to someone who studied it intensely and acquired it as his spiritual possession. The Talmud also states that a person should repeat what he learned many times until he knows it by heart.

4. Our Sages say that if a person has sufficient merits, when he is brought before the Heavenly Tribunal a proclamation precedes him saying, ‘happy is he who comes here with his learning in his hand’, and they surely were referring to someone who learned it by heart.

“And the utterly undoubtable truth is that if the entire world, from one end to the other, would be absent of our engagement and delving into the Torah, even for one moment, literally, then all the worlds - both upper and lower - would be destroyed instantly, and would turn into utter chaos, chas v’shalom…” (Nefesh Hachaim)
