Toras Habayis / Ch. 7 – 27

We say in our evening prayers, ‘therefore Hashem our G-d, when we lie down (to sleep) and when we rise, we will speak in your statutes, and will rejoice in your Torah’. We see that we mention two names of Hashem to express how happy we are He gave us the Torah, so if a person is so happy about it, he should find some place convenient to acquire at least a few masechtas, even if he can’t study properly at home. Just as a person travels far and wide to become wealthy, even when he could scrape by without travelling, surely a person should go out of his way to acquire at least some tractates, as his eternal life is in the balance.

This is how our Sages explained the verse, ‘It is not beyond the ocean’, that even if one had to travel across the seven seas he should do so, all the more so when it is just around the corner.

“And the utterly undoubtable truth is that if the entire world, from one end to the other, would be absent of our engagement and delving into the Torah, even for one moment, literally, then all the worlds - both upper and lower - would be destroyed instantly, and would turn into utter chaos, chas v’shalom…” (Nefesh Hachaim)
