Toras Habayis / Ch. 7 – 28

When we observe the wisdom of previous generation, we wonder how it is that Hashem gave them such abundance of Torah. Surely Hashem could give us no less if we were worthy. The answer is that the previous generations were whole-heartedly dedicated to the Torah, and worldly possessions were insignificant in their eyes. Even after they amassed wisdom, they would travel for years to acquire more. Hashem reciprocated by opening their eyes and hearts to plumb the depths of His wisdom. In our generation we spend much less effort, and the results are proportionate to our investment.

“And the utterly undoubtable truth is that if the entire world, from one end to the other, would be absent of our engagement and delving into the Torah, even for one moment, literally, then all the worlds - both upper and lower - would be destroyed instantly, and would turn into utter chaos, chas v’shalom…” (Nefesh Hachaim)
