Mitzvah# 337) Not to trick in buying and selling

Parshas Behar

“And when you sell an item to your friend or you buy from your friend, do not trick each other!” (Vayikra 25:14)

It is a positive commandment that one may not trick any member of Klal Yisrael in buying and selling, be it man or women, as it says “And when you sell an item to your friend or you buy from your friend, do not trick each other!”, and Chazal said that this refers to trickery of money. (They also said that we can extrapolate from this verse that if one comes to buy something, one should buy from a Jew, as it says “or you buy from your friend,”).

The root of this commandment is well-known, for it is an extremely logical sensible thing that it is incorrect to take another person’s money by trickery or deceit. Instead, every person should merit through his own hard work that which Hashem favors him with truth and integrity, and everyone gains from this, as in the same way as he does not trick his friends so too they will not cheat him. Even if there will be a man who knows how to cheat better than other people, maybe his sons will not be like him and other people will cheat them, so that it ends up equal to everybody, and this is a great achievement in the civilization of the world.

This commandment applies in all places and at all times, both to men and women.
