There is a story brought down in the holy Zohar about one named Elazar (trans: G-d helped) who repented fully. The Sages said about him that his name caused him (to repent) because G-d helped him. Thus, it is good for a person to call his children by good names and he should not be particular to call them by his ancestors’ names, for what will it add or give? Go and learn from the earlier generations who did not use the names of their ancestors. If Hashem will cause them to have a little bit of help to go on the path of the good, then this name is better than seven names of his ancestors. Therefore, a good man will choose to name his sons with good names, or by the name of an incident which reminds (him) of the kindness of Hashem and thus he will utter with his lips at the time he calls the name. It is found written in holy books that one whose children are not surviving should call his son “Bentzion” or he should call him two names and then he will surely live with the help of Hashem, He should be blessed.
