- One must be very careful about honoring one’s father and mother and about revering them, for the Torah compares honoring and fearing parents to the honor and fear of Heaven (Turand Shulchan Aruch, Yoreh Dei’ah 240:1).
2. In what way does one revere parents? One should not stand in the spot designated for his father to stand nor sit in the seat designated for his father; [however, it is permissible to stand in the area designated for the father to sit]. One may not negate his father’s words in his presence nor even agree with his father’s words by saying, “Father’s opinion makes more sense,” because by doing so the child makes it appear as though the father needs the child’s agreement. But when the father is not present, the child may disagree or concur with the father’s opinion (ibid.).
