Laws of Selection on Shabbath (30)

REMOVAL OF PEELS, SHELLS

AND OTHER WASTE MATERIAL

30.a. A peel or skin which is edible and which is in fact eaten by most people may be removed from food on Shabbath,

1) even with a specially designed peeler and

2) even if one’s intention is not to eat the food right away, but to leave it for a meal later on during the same Shabbath.

30.b. Examples are the peel of apples, tomatoes, pears and peaches – which most people are accustomed to eat with their peel – as well as the skin of many varieties of fish and poultry.

30.c. Whether or not a particular skin or peel is usually eaten is a fact to be ascertained in each locality, but this can sometimes be a difficult question to answer (as in the cases of fish skin, cucumber peel and the white, interior skin under the peel of a citrus fruit).

“Who is the man who desires life… guard your tongue from evil, and your lips from speaking deceitfully” (Tehillim 34:13-14)
