Laws Relating to Squeezing Fruit (88)

Chapter 5

Laws Relating to Squeezing Fruit on Shabbath and Yom Tov

3.a. It is permissible to squeeze fruit by hand (but not with a specially designed squeezer) onto non-liquid food on Shabbath or Yom Tov, provided that one of the following two conditions is satisfied:

1) either the food is of such a nature that it will absorb most of the juice squeezed out or

2) the purpose of the juice is to improve the flavor of the food.

3.b. For the special case of squeezing grapes on Shabbath see paragraph 4 below.

4. While the rule with respect to squeezing fruit by hand onto non-liquid food applies to all fruit, it is desirable not to squeeze grapes on Shabbath, as distinct from Yom Tov, even in the circumstances specified in paragraph 3, except for the purpose of feeding a baby.
