Laws Relating to Squeezing Fruit (93)

Chapter 5

Laws Relating to Squeezing Fruit on Shabbath and Yom Tov

10.a. The prohibition against squeezing fruit is not transgressed if the fruit is put to one’s mouth and the juice

sucked out, but one must take care not to squeeze the fruit with one’s fingers while it is being sucked.

10.b. In this way, one may suck oranges or chew sugar cane.

10.c.1) With regard to grapes, a stricter attitude should be adopted. (Compare paragraph 4 above.)

2) Consequently, if one wishes to eat grapes without their skin and their pips,

a) one should not suck the juice out of them while holding them in one’s fingers, but

b) one should put them into one’s mouth, eat the flesh and then take out what is left.
