Laws of Grinding, Chopping, Crushing and Grating on Shabbath (103)

Chapter 6

Laws of Grinding, Chopping, Crushing and Grating on Shabbath.

7.a. Banana, avocado and other raw fruit should not be spread on bread, as this is included in the prohibition against grinding.

7.b. The prohibition does not, however, apply to a fruit which is so soft that, if one tried to pull it along, the part one is holding would come away in one’s fingers.

8.a. As a rule, it is forbidden to squash or mash bananas, tomatoes and the like in the usual way.

8.b. If one wishes, for example, to mash a banana for a small child, one should vary the method normally employed during the week, as by the use of a spoon or the handle of a fork (and not its prongs).
