Laws of Kneading on Shabbath (117)

Chapter 8

Laws of Kneading on Shabbath

1. The prohibition against kneading is in no way applicable unless the following three conditions are all fulfilled:

a. Two separate substances are being combined.

b. Either

1) each of these substances is comprised of soft, pliable matter, such as dough, or of small particles (whether because that is its natural state or because it has been ground down or chopped fine), or has a stiff consistency, such as thick honey,

or

2) one such substance takes one of these forms and the other is a liquid.

c. The substances combine in such a way that they mingle together and fuse into one mixture, regardless of whether this is

1) a result of the action of a liquid naturally present in one or both of the substances,

2) because one of the substances is itself a liquid or

3) due to the natural consistency of the substances being mixed, for example,

a) honey and soft cheese or

b) butter and cocoa powder.

(For a better understanding of these conditions, which are difficult to comprehend in the abstract, reference should be made to the numerous examples contained below in this chapter.)
