408. Healing. (2)

A person is obligated to be very careful not to become not well, and if he nevertheless does fall ill, he must chase after the cures and expert doctors and not worry about the financial loss incurred, as a person will give all that he has for the sake of his soul. How good it would be (when ill) to give a lot to charity as by doing this he is fulfilling a positive biblical commandment and it has a special power also to annul the evil decree. Before thinking about cures one must always reflect on the fact that one must believe with a complete belief that his cure is in the hands of Hashem alone, who is the merciful trustworthy doctor, the doctor who heals the ill people of His nation Klal Yisrael, and should therefore precede any cures with a prayer in front of Him.

One who has an ill person in his house has a full obligation not to sleep, slumber, relax or be quiet until he has sought all types of doctors and all types of cures which are “within reach of his hand” (which he can afford). If he is a poor person who cannot afford these things the obligation is incumbent on the people living in his town to provide him with doctors and cures and they should not consider the great cost for this is a very strong and great good deed.

Go out and learn how far the obligation of healing reaches as Chazal permitted transgressing the severe prohibitions of Shabbos and committing all the sins in the Torah in order to cure an invalid who is in danger of dying because they said “It is better to profane one Shabbos in order to keep many Shabbosos!”, and if this is the case it does not need saying that it is correct to spend all the money in the world in order to keep one Jewish soul alive which is considered as if he had supported an entire world. Hashem will repay them sevenfold to their laps with wealth and riches in their houses.

“My brothers and my nation, take this sefer Torah, and with this, and like this learn well, so that you should have it good; listen and enliven your soul, and achieve gladness and joy in this world and the world to come” (From the author’s intro.)
