It does not suffice for a person to conduct himself peacefully with everybody, as even when he sees a dispute between other people or between a husband and wife he must endeavor with all of his strength to bring peace between them, as by doing this he is bringing pleasure to his creator, and this is one of the things about which Chazal said that one eats their fruit in this world and the main reward remains for the next world.
A proof for the importance of this matter is that Hashem Himself changed the truth in order to keep the peace and also allowed His own Holy Name which was written with sanctity to be erased in order to keep the peace between a husband and his wife, and this was the attribute of Aharon the High Priest who used to ensure there was more peace in the world and about this Chazal have commanded us “Be amongst the disciples of Aharon!”.
It is correct and fitting for even a great man to forget about his own honor and go to an insignificant man to try and be an agent for peace as his own honor is not more important than the honor of heaven, and the main honor of this commandment is with great people as their words have an effect either because of embarrassment or out of respect and because of this it says that “Wise people increase peace in the world!”.
