Ahavas Chessed / Ch. 20 – 153

Our Sages said, ‘One should not spend more than a fifth of his wealth on charity’, but this refers only to feeding the needy. Regarding supporting Torah the early authorities rule that one can spend more, since it is considered as if he ‘bought’ himself Torah, not as giving away money to others. When a person comes to collect money for Torah, one should greet him as one greets his business partner and not just throw him some coins, for the way a person behaves to others, that is how he will be treated in the next world.

He has told you, O Man, what is good, and what Hashem asks of you; but to do justice, to love loving-kindness, and to walk discreetly with your G-d” (Micha 6:8)
