It is very important for a person to learn at least one maseches or a chapter of mishnayos by heart, as this has many benefits:

2. [Learning some Torah by heart] facilitates performing the mitzva of ‘you shall speak in them at home and when on the way’. Going to the beis midrashis not always practical, and sometimes a person is in a place where there is no light or he didn’t bring a seferwith him, but if he knows some mishnayos by heart he can utilize such times to earn tremendous reward. Also when travelling learning from a sefer is not always practical, but if he knows something by heart he can repeat it to himself again and again.
