Hilchos Chanukah / Kindling the lights (c) – 10

1. If the menorahis placed in the entrance to the house, it should be positioned above three tefachim but lower than ten tefachim. This shows that the lights are being kindled for the sake of the mitzvah and not merely for illumination. Nevertheless, if it was lit lower than three, or higher than ten tefachim, the person has fulfilled his obligation. [According to R’ A.C. No’eh the length of a tefach is 8cm/3.15in.; according to the Chazon Ish it is 9.6cm/3.78in.] (Kitzur Shulchan Aruch, 139)

2. When lighting in the window, one may light it there even though it is higher than ten tefachimfrom the floor. (ibid.)
