Categories of Muktzeh

Laws specifically relating to muktzeh on Yom Tov are explained in Chapter 21.

 

BASIS LA-DAVAR HA-ASSUR

70.a.1) if,

a) before the commencement of Shabbath, one put Into one’s pocket a muktzeh and a non-muktzeh object, and

b) the latter has more importance for one than the former, neither the pocket nor the garment in which it is contained becomes a basis la-davar ha-assur.

2) a) Nonetheless, where possible, one should shake the muktzeh object out of the garment before putting it on.

b) This should be done as described in paragraph 72b below.

70.b. 1) If the pocket has in it

a) only a muktzeh object or

b) a muktzeh and a non-muktzeh object, but the latter does not have more importance for one than the former, the pocket becomes a basis la-davar ha-assur, provided the various conditions set out in paragraphs 50 to 56 above are fulfilled.

2) In that event, one may not

a) move the pocket, nor

b) put anything into it, nor even

c) insert one’s hand into it.

3) It should be noted that this situation is unlikely to arise, due to the circumstances mentioned in paragraph 72a below.
