Categories of Muktzeh
Laws specifically relating to muktzeh on Yom Tov are explained in Chapter 21.
MISCELLANEOUS CASES CONNECTED WITH MUKTZEH
80.a. 1) a) An object which is normally, or more often than not, used for performing activities which are permitted on Shabbath, or even
b) an object which is used with equal frequency for performing both permitted and prohibited activities,
may be moved for any purpose whatsoever.
2) This means that it may be moved
a) in order to use it right away,
b) in order to have it ready for use later that same Shabbath,
c) because one wishes to use the space which it occupies,
d) because one is afraid it may be spoiled or lost if left where it is or
e) if one derives pleasure or some benefit from the very act of moving or handling the object, even
though one cannot be said to be actually using it.
3) On the other hand, with the exceptions mentioned immediately below, moving such an object for no purpose at all is forbidden.
80.b. The following objects are exceptions to this rule and may be moved even without any purpose:
1) books that one is allowed to read on Shabbath,
2) food that is ready to be eaten,
3) clothing and decorative accessories;
4) according to some authorities, objects which are in common use, such as knives, cups and dishes.
