There is another obligation of awe which is incumbent on us. It is called “awe of the temple”. Nowadays that we have no temple, we can fulfil this commandment by our attitude to a synagogue, which we consider like a mini-temple. It is well-known that the holy Zohar is very stringent about the interdiction to speak in the synagogue, to the extent that it is written therein that one who speaks in a synagogue has no portion in the G-d of Yisrael. I call to you, have pity on the honor of our Creator and on your own souls, and consider the words of Chazal who warned us about this severe sin, make sure that you keep away from evil and perform only goodness, and your souls will rejoice in the pastures. If you find it difficult, think about the damage caused by sins, and realize that the reward is in direct proportion to the difficulty and pain.
Included in the obligation to treat the synagogue with awe, is the law that one may not speak therewith a loud voice as one would speak in the marketplace. Even if one sees someone performing an evil act there and one wants to stoop him, one should not shout in a strong voice. Instead, he should consider to himself that he is standing before a king in the king’s own hall, and he should cloak himself with fear and trembling. It should be an embarrassment and cause for anger when one sees someone raising his voice in a synagogue, and Hashem will bring everyone to justice, and the words of wise men are quiet and are therefore listened to.
