General Principles of Muktzeh (522)

Chapter 22

General Principles Relating to Muktzeh on Shabbath and Yom Tov

MAKING IT PROHIBITED FOR AN ARTICLE TO BE MOVED

26.a. One must not place a tray, plate or other receptacle next to or under a candle on Shabbath to catch dripping wax, as the wax is muhtzeh.

26.b. On the other hand, one may put a receptacle (not containing water) in such a position in order to catch sparks, since they are not of any consequence, and the receptacle may be moved even after they have fallen into it.

27.a. It is prohibited to do an act, in relation to an article that is not muktzeh, which will result in its no longer being fit for its normal use on Shabbath.

27.b. For example, even where the prohibition referred to in Chapter 15, paragraph 4a is inapplicable, it is forbidden to wet articles of clothing or linens if, as a result, they will be unfit for use as such that day.
