General Principles of Muktzeh (523)

Chapter 22

General Principles Relating to Muktzeh on Shabbath and Yom Tov

MUKTZEH MEI-CHAMATH MITZVA

28. Any object which has been set aside for use in the performance of a mitzva, and from which it is forbidden, as a result, to derive benefit, is muktzeh mei-chamath mitzva on Shabbath and Yom Tov.

29.a. By way of illustration, on the days of Yom Tov and Shabbath occurring during Sukkoth, the sechach and decorations of the sukka may not be moved, even after they have fallen from the sukka.

29.b. On the intermediate days of Sukkoth, one may move them, but one must not derive benefit from them by

1) breaking a splinter of wood off the sechach to pick one’s teeth, or

2) eating fruits with which one decorated the sukka, even after they have fallen down.
