General Principles of Muktzeh (525)

Chapter 22

General Principles Relating to Muktzeh on Shabbath and Yom Tov

USING, TOUCHING AND MOVING OBJECTS WHICH ARE MUKTZEH

32.a Subject to what is stated below an object which is muktzeh may not be moved, but may be used in its present position.

1) One may, for instance, sit on a muktzeh object.*

2) One may likewise place articles on a muktzeh object. (See further paragraph 38 below)

32.b. 1) One is not allowed to use a muktzeh object, even without moving it, if, in the process of such use, one performs an act whose direct result is the destruction of the object.

2) An example of such use is burning, on Yom Tov, an object which broke on Yom Tov and is muktzeh because it is no longer fit to be used for its original purpose.

32.c. 1) In general, one may touch a muktzeh object, even with one’s hand, but only so long as this will not make it move.

2) One may, therefore, not touch a lamp hanging from the ceiling.

* It is, however, as well not to do so where there is no need, if sitting on it will cause it to move.
