253. Haste

In the attribute of haste there is a negative side, but there is also an extremely positive side in that after he has decided in his mind to perform a certain good deed, be it in spiritual or physical matters, he should be quick to perform it immediately, and a good deed which comes to hand should not be left to “deteriorate”, for he cannot know what will happen each day, and there are so many things which can hold him back or occupy him with other things which can come about each minute or second. In the same way that a person wishes that other people should fulfil his wishes immediately, so too he should make haste and fulfil the commandments of Hashem.

On the other hand, before performing the act with haste, he has to consider that act slowly, in profane matters to decide whether it is the right thing to do, and in holy matters, to make sure that it does not become a good deed achieved through a bad deed. When he has decided that it is the correct thing to do, he should also consider in which way it is correct to perform the action to achieve the desired result.

“My brothers and my nation, take this sefer Torah, and with this, and like this learn well, so that you should have it good; listen and enliven your soul, and achieve gladness and joy in this world and the world to come” (From the author’s intro.)
