General Principles of Muktzeh (531)

Chapter 22

General Principles Relating to Muktzeh on Shabbath and Yom Tov

USING, TOUCHING AND MOVING OBJECTS WHICH ARE MUKTZEH

40.a. 1) As a rule, a person should not pick up a child who is holding a stone or some other muktzeh object in his hand.

2) The child should first put the muktzeh object down, without the adult’s touching the object.

40.b. Only if it is obvious that the child is extremely anxious to be picked up, and must be pacified to stop him from screaming, may one pick up the child and carry him while the muktzeh object is in his hand and, even then, only

1) when the muktzeh object is of no value and

2) in a place where there is an eiruv or where it is otherwise permissible to carry objects about.

40.c. While a child is holding a muktzeh object, one is allowed to hold his hand (without picking him up), provided the object has no value.

40.d. 1) If the muktzeh object which the child is holding has some value, one may neither lift him up nor hold his hand, even when he is extremely anxious that one should do so.

2) This is because there is a risk that one will pick up the muktzeh object should it drop out of the child’s hand.

41.a. One may ask a non-Jew to move a keli she-melachto le-issur, even if one’s sole purpose is to prevent it from being spoiled or stolen.

41.b. One may ask a non-Jew to move other categories of muktzeh objects only

1) if one needs to use the muktzeh object or requires the place which it occupies or

2) in order to avoid a serious loss.
