The holy Zohar writes that if a person thinks about holy things, he draws upon himself a spirit of holiness, whereas if he thinks about bad things, he draws impurity over himself and defiles his soul. In short, in the place that he thinks, that is his portion. This being the case, it is correct for a person to strengthen himself with all of his power and force to think only pure thoughts, to think about things which bring him closer to fear and love of Hashem and to cleave to Him, to take hold of humility and other good character traits, and to consider the loftiness of Hashem, for His greatness is infinite. A person should constantly do this in order to fulfil that which the verse says “And you shall love Hashem your G-d with all your hearts!”, the explanation thereof being that one’s heart should not be able to allow the sharing of the love of anything else with the love of Hashem, to the end that all of his love should be guided by the Torah and all of his actions for the sake of heaven.
