142 – The mitzvah of hosting guests / Part III, Chapter One (b)

The mitzvah of hosting guests is so beloved before the Holy One that He designated a separate portion in the Torah about this topic. This is to teach us that we, too, should keep this mitzvah with fervor all our lives. They said in the Gemara (Shabbos 127a): “Hospitality to wayfarers is greater than welcoming the presence of the Shechinah.” It is also one of the things for which a person enjoys its “fruit” in this World, while the principle remains intact for the World to Come.

One who consistently grasps opportunities to keep this mitzvah merits children, as it is written in the Torah that after Avraham provided hospitality to the wayfarers, they informed him, Behold Sarah your wife will have a son (Bereishis 18:10).

He has told you, O Man, what is good, and what Hashem asks of you; but to do justice, to love loving-kindness, and to walk discreetly with your G-d” (Micha 6:8)
