Throughout the Torah and the sayings of our Sages there are many statements in praise of the trait of kindness. And in many places kindness is compared to the merit of Torah – both with regard to the fact that in the merit of kindness one can be spared all trouble and also that through it one can merit all benefit. Likewise, the trait of chessed-kindness also helps to atone sins, as is written, Through kindness and truth iniquity will be forgiven (Mishlei 16:6). This trait is also beneficial for extending the life of a person and for being spared the pangs of the coming of Moshiach.
