Trustworthiness is a faithful character trait which is a foundation stone and an important rule in the Torah. It means that the worker must be faithful to his employer and do his work faithfully, and that a messenger should be faithful to his senders. It especially applies to people sent to perform a commandment of the Torah or paid to do the service of heaven. Examples of this are teachers of children and cantors. These people need extra strong vigilance to conduct themselves with complete faithfulness and not to move even one iota away from the job he was sent to do, so that it cannot be said “Cursed is he who performs the service of Hashem with trickery!”. Employers also need to be faithful to their employees to supervise them and pay them. this is especially true of people who are occupied with heavenly work, for they are dependent on the members of the community, who themselves are dependent on He who spoke and the world came into existence.
The general rule is that this is a character-trait which is essential for every person so that a worker will perform his work wholeheartedly with all of his soul and not stray after his own profit. He should do exactly that which he is obligated to do, and the employer should treat him generously.
When dealing with all of those who rely on him, whether in body or money, whether in wisdom or advice, he should not hold back from giving people help when he is able. When he does it, he should do the full goodness like a person who does it for himself, and not stray after financial gains, and Hashem will repay him.
