Laws of Lashon Hara / 7: 9 (60)

9. One who overhears a piece of information that is spoken as an innocent comment, it is forbidden to believe it, how much more so not to act upon it.

Specifically so regarding a negative statement, or if the speaker judges someone in a negative light, or if the speaker is not speaking firsthand, it is an outright prohibition to believe him.

 

“Who is the man who desires life… guard your tongue from evil, and your lips from speaking deceitfully” (Tehillim 34:13-14)
