Laws of Lashon Hara / 8: 13-14 (69)

13. It is forbidden to accept or believe lashon hara regarding any Jew who is in the category of ‘your fellow’. However a heretic is not considered your fellow and therefore, it is permitted to believe lashon hara that one heard about him.

14. It is forbidden to accept lashon hara from strangers as well as from one’s own family members – even not from one’s parents. One is obligated to gently reprimand family members regarding the sin of lashon hara and one should take extra care that his family not hear from him words of lashon hara.

“Who is the man who desires life… guard your tongue from evil, and your lips from speaking deceitfully” (Tehillim 34:13-14)
