Humility is the best character trait, as Chazal say that “Humility is greater than them all!”, and it is the father of the entire Torah and all good character-traits, and it brings its “friends” with it; love, brotherhood, peace and friendship with all people. one who has this character-trait will never become angry, and will control his emotions, his spirit will be a broken one, and his heart a low and broken heart. He will not insist on anything, will flee from honor, and will not seek greatness. He will not cherish money, nor take any credit for himself. These are only a few examples of the many good things which are drawn after humility. Because of the greatness of its praise and its inherent goodness, it is a very rare commodity, and a person must strengthen himself to overcome his inclination with constant pure thoughts and he should wage war with trickery and ruses against his inclination who is trying to persuade him to raise up his heart to make him an abomination before Hashem. The following expression should be constantly on his lips and in his heart: “What are we and what are our lives? What is our strength and what is our righteousness? Surely all of our strong men are like nothing, our famous men are like they never existed, our wise men are considered like unknowledgeable people, our understanding men are as if they have no sense, for all of our actions are like nothing and the days of our lives are empty.”.
