Laws of Rechilus / 6: 8-10 (99)

8. It is forbidden to accept rechilus even from someone who speaks it seemingly innocently.

9. One who hears rechilus and there are ‘recognizable signs’ that prove that the information is true, it is permitted do believe it under the following conditions: A. There is no way to judge him favorably. B. The sign is definite and obvious. C. He saw the recognizable signs firsthand. D. It will be beneficial to him in the future for if not he is forbidden to listen in the first place]. D. He can only believe it but not pass it on to others, and not cause him harm.

10. One whose business has been harmed as a result of slander, and there are ‘recognizable signs’ that so-and-so is the culprit, it is forbidden to inform on him. It is only permitted in the following case: A. It will prevent the culprit from further slandering him. B. There is no other way to prevent him from slandering him. C. He saw him slandering him with his own eyes, as it is not enough to rely on ‘recognizable signs’, and all the more so not to rely on others.
