Chapter 27

Laws Relating to Animals on Shabbath and Yom Tov

LEADING AN ANIMAL OR ALLOWING IT TO PERFORM A FORBIDDEN ACTIVITY

4.a. Both the prohibition against leading an animal and the obligation to prevent one’s animal from performing a forbidden activity are applicable only with y reference to activities which would be forbidden by the Torah if one performed them oneself.

4.b. Neither is applicable with reference to activities which would only be subject to a Rabbinical prohibition if one performed them oneself.

4.c. Nonetheless, one should not let one’s animal go out into carmelith with a burden on its back, despite the fact that carrying in carmelith is forbidden only by Rabbinical prohibition. (See paragraph 7 below)

5. The prohibition against leading an animal and the obligation to prevent one’s animal from performing forbidden activity are applicable not only on Shabbath, but also on Yom Kippur and Yom Tov.
