343. Evaluation (2)

In the same way we find that when one spends money on a good deed one should evaluate which good deed is more important to Hashem and spend the money on that one. The Gemarah (Yerushalmi Shekalim) quotes a story about a man who boasted about the synagogues that his ancestors built and spent a huge amount of money on, and Rabbi Oshaya said to him that investing so much money in the building of synagogues was incorrect as it would have been better to give that money to people who learn the Torah. This obligation of evaluation applies especially to someone who does not have the means to give a lot of money to charity. Such a person should consider his options very carefully and decide to spend his money on the good deed which is the most important, in the same way as a good businessman will try always to use his money to buy the merchandise which will give him the most profit.

If, however, Hashem has broadened his means and given him an abundance of wealth, he should make sure he gives to all the different types of good causes. He should open his hand to give to all of the coffers of the congregation and to all of the holy causes. He should do everything in his power to be the Sandak at a circumcision, and it is a good man who sustains his words with justice.

“My brothers and my nation, take this sefer Torah, and with this, and like this learn well, so that you should have it good; listen and enliven your soul, and achieve gladness and joy in this world and the world to come” (From the author’s intro.)
