357. Redemption

Hashem gave us an abundance of redemption, as Chazal said that we must give thanks to Hashem for He is good as He reclaims the debts of each person in a way that will be good for him. When dealing with a rich man, He reclaims from his ox, with a poor man, from his sheep. and with a widow, from his chicken. This mean to say that when a person has committed a sin and deserves the death penalty from heaven Hashem atones for the sin by taking the life of his ox, making his chicken lose itself, his plates smash, or he hurts his little finger and blood comes out, replacing the entire soul with a small amount of soul. Similarly, with any sort of pain or loss which comes to a person, be it by hand of man or directly from heaven, it is all for his good and to redeem his soul.

Once upon a time Rabbi Yehoshua Ben Levi was walking together with Eliyahu Hanavi and they entered the house of a certain poor man who received them with a happy face and much respect and honor. In the middle of the night Eliyau arose and killed the much cherished cow of the poor man. Rabbi Yehoshua Ben Levi wondered very much at this until Eliyahu revealed to him that it had been decreed that this man’s wife should die and the cow redeemed her.

It follows that one must accept all pain, loss and trials which come to a person with happiness. How good and pleasant it would be if for every illness or bad dream, and for every trouble (they should not happen) one performed the order of redemption of the soul which is written the holy books, as charity, prayer and the Holy Names which are mentioned and performed have the power to shield and save from all troubles and difficulties and there will be happiness.

“My brothers and my nation, take this sefer Torah, and with this, and like this learn well, so that you should have it good; listen and enliven your soul, and achieve gladness and joy in this world and the world to come” (From the author’s intro.)
