Chapter 27

Laws Relating to Animals on Shabbath and Yom Tov

FEEDING AND OTHERWISE ATTENDING TO ANIMALS

22.a. On Yom Tov, too, one may put food in the normal way in front of animals or birds which are dependent on one for their food, if

1) there is no prohibition against catching them on Yom Tov (as to which see paragraphs 31 to 38 below, especially 34), or

2) they are of a kind one is not permitted to eat.

22.b. 1) Food for those animals or birds which one is permitted to eat, but which one is prohibited from catching on Yom Tov, should not be put down in its usual place, but a little distance away.

2) The Rabbis required one to make this variation in the usual method of feeding as a reminder, so that one should not come to catch these animals or birds in order to slaughter and eat them.

3) No such fear of course exists

a) in the case of animals or birds which one is not permitted to eat, or

b) on Shabbath, when slaughter is forbidden.

23.a. Dogs are in a special category, and one may put food in front of them, both on Shabbath and on Yom Tov, even if they are not dependent on man for their food.

23.b. Likewise, one is allowed, both on Shabbath and on Yom Tov, to put food in front of any animal which is hungry and cannot find anything to eat.
