It is not correct for a person to be upset about anything in the world except for the pain of heaven, for about the vanities of this world there is no reason to be upset as it is all emptiness. Chazal gave a parable about this fact that it looks like Hashem is willing to give pain to righteous people and does not worry about it when they have pain or get upset about the things which are happening at the time, as it is like a father who sees his son when he is a baby building a house of wood and straw and he is very happy and when another person comes and destroys his building and the child goes to the father and complains about it and shouts bitterly and thinks that it is correct that his father should kill that man whereas his father laughs and does not worry at all as he knows that in truth his son’s pain is emptiness and nothing and it is just because of his lack of understanding that he is so upset. So too in our world as the pain that a person feels about matters appertaining to this world are all emptiness and waste of spirit as in the same way as a father will sometimes help his son to build these houses and even buy him things to play with as toys, so too Hashem sometimes will fulfil the will of a person in this world because that is what he wishes in order to give pleasure to the person.
If Hashem gives pain to a person in different ways in order to atone for his sins and he is in pain and cries, Hashem will not take notice even though He is merciful and the master of pity as this is similar to a child who is very dirty and when his mother cleans and washes him he cries a lot and his mother takes no notice. In the same way that a doctor sometimes has to make the patient endure difficult ways of healing and sometimes will even have to amputate a limb and not worry about the pain of the amputation as he knows it is all for his benefit and wellbeing. So too is our case and a person should understand this thoroughly so that it is incorrect for him to feel pain at all.
