Nidchei Yisrael / Ch. 12 – 92

A person should learn from Yosef Hatzaddik who continued learning Torah even after being sold as a slave. Our Sages related that whenever he wasn’t required to work, he would sit and rehearse the Torah his father had taught him. This Torah learning is what saved him from sin. The Torah tells us this so that all generations will emulate his behavior, and learn from his experience that when a person is involved in Torah learning he will be spared much anguish, and will be extremely successful and appreciated. Even the final redemption depends on our learning Torah, as our Sages taught that the exiles will not be gathered if not for Torah learning, and learning Torah, especially when difficult, is what will bring the redemption quickly.

“And the utterly undoubtable truth is that if the entire world, from one end to the other, would be absent of our engagement and delving into the Torah, even for one moment, literally, then all the worlds - both upper and lower - would be destroyed instantly, and would turn into utter chaos, chas v’shalom…” (Nefesh Hachaim)
